Super Simple Homemade Modeling Dough

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

This one is fun and no-bake; so, let the children mix it up. Making the dough is as much fun as creating art with the dough.

You need:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • water
  • food coloring (optional)

Make sure everyone washes their hands before you start (I’m just saying). Mix the flour and salt. Slowly pour in the water while mixing it with a mixing spoon. Once it begins to clump up, the children can use their hands to begin kneading the dough. Continue to slowly add water until you get a dough, and all the salt and flour mixture is included. If the dough feels sticky, sprinkle a little flour on top and knead it in.

Once you have your dough, separate into even clumps. Use your fingers to create a bowl in each clump. Drop in two or three drops of food coloring. Knead the food coloring into the dough until the color is evenly distributed. (You can also create it marble-like by stopping before the color is even or by combining two different colors.)

You can use cookie cutters, rolling pins, etc to shape the dough. Colors can be combined to create other colors or multi-colored art. It will harden in about 12 hours. You made need to turn it over for the bottom side to dry. If you don’t use the food coloring, the children can paint them after they dry.

HINT: When we do messy projects like this one, the children work on flat serving tray to contain the mess. It minimizes the amount that gets on the table and floor. (Yes, some will get on the table and floor.)

HINT: If you don’t want it to dry out, seal it in a zip-lock bag.
