In Remembrance of Me

Scripture: Luke 22:19

Need: Pictures of a place, people, or event

Sermon

Good morning, children. (show pictures to the children) Today, I have with me some pictures. We all have pictures of things and events that are special to us. We take pictures so we can have a visual reminder of someone or something that happened. Pictures are a great way to remember things.

When Jesus was near the end of his time here on earth, he sat down with his friends for a very special meal. During this meal, he did something that gave them a picture of what was about to happen. He took the bread and broke it, and told them to remember that his body would get broken. Then he took the wine and asked them all to drink, and to remember he died so they could receive forgiveness.

(read or have an older child read Luke 22:19)

We don’t have any pictures or paintings of what the real Jesus looked like. Many artist have drawn or painted what they think Jesus looked like. However, Jesus gave us something more important. A way to remember what he did for us. Whenever we have the Lord’s Supper, we are doing several things: we are obeying Jesus, because he told us to do it; and we are remembering what Jesus did so we could receive forgiveness from God.

Just like we take pictures to remember someone or something that happened, the Lord’s Supper is a visual picture to remind us what Jesus did for us.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for sending Jesus. Help us to always remember that Jesus came and gave his life so we could be forgiven. Amen.
