Attracted to Jesus

Themes: Doing for others can attract them to Jesus

Scripture: Ephesians 5:2

Need: Bible, magnet, compass

Sermon

Good morning, children. Today, I have a couple of items with me. (show the children the compass) This is a compass. A compass can be used to help you know what direction you are traveling in. The needle on the compass always points north, because it is attracted to the magnetic field at the north pole. (show the children the magnet) However, if I take this magnet, I can redirect the direction the needle points. (show the children how the magnet can move the compass needle) Just like the needle is attracted to the north pole, it is attracted to the magnet.

When we help people with the things they need, we show Jesus’ love to others. This can attract them to Jesus and helps them want to learn about Jesus. (read or have an older child read Ephesians 5:2) Helping others gives us the chance to share with others what we know about Jesus.

Prayer

Dear God, help us to remember that helping others gives us a chance to tell them about Jesus. Amen.

Helping Others

Topic: Show God’s Love by helping others

Verse: Galatians 6:2

Need: Bible, backpack full of heavy items

Sermon

Good morning, children. (ask one of the smaller children to try to pick up the backpack. It should weigh enough for this to be difficult if not impossible.) The backpack is too heavy for _____ to carry (or difficult for ______ to carry.) If _____ was to carry the backpack very far, they might not make it. What can we do? (let children respond) We could just leave it here, but we might need some of this stuff later. (Ask other children if they would be willing to help child carry some of the things in the backpack. Take things out of the backpack and hand them to the children who said they would help.)

Sometimes, people need our help. Getting something done is easier when more than one person has to do it all. Our verse, in Galatians 6:2, tells us something about helping others. (read or have an older child read the verse) When we help others, we show them God’s love, by letting them know that they do not have to do it all by themselves.

Prayer

Dear God, help us to show others your love by being willing to help. Amen.

Jesus Is Always With Us

Topic: Jesus helps us; Jesus is with us

Verse: Matthew 28:20

Need: Bible, 2 balloons, tape, needle

Sermon

Good morning, children. (take out balloon without tape on it and needle) What will happen if I poke this balloon with this needle? (let children answer and then pop the balloon. Now, take out the balloon with the tape on it.) What do you think will happen if I poke this balloon with the needle? (let children answer; then carefully poke the needle through the balloon where the tape is.) Why didn’t it pop? This balloon has a piece of tape on it. (show children the tape) The balloon did not pop because the tape helped to make the balloon stronger.

Jesus promises to help us. Because Jesus is alive, we know he will keep his promises to us. Listen to Jesus’ promise. (read or have an older child read the last part of Matthew 28:20) Jesus promises to be with us now and forever, helping us and caring for us.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank you for your promise to always be with us. Help us to remember your promise. Amen.

Notes

When preparing the balloon with the tape fill it a little less than full. Use about 2 inches on tape at the end of the balloon. Be sure to practice poking the needle through the tape and into the balloon a few times before doing it in front of the children.

He Is Alive!

Topic: Easter, Resurrection

Verse: Mark 16:6

Need: Bible, cards with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John written on them

Sermon

Good morning, children. Can anyone tell me the first 4 books of the New Testament? (show cards if the children need help) Yes, they are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We call these first 4 books the Gospels. Does anyone know what the word gospel means?  The word gospel means “good news” or “good message.” These 4 books tell us the good message about Jesus. Let me tell you a story about a day when some women got some good news.

It was early Sunday morning. On Friday, Mary and her friends had watched as Jesus died on the cross. They were very sad. As they got near the place where Jesus was buried, there was an earthquake that shook the ground beneath them. An angel came and rolled away the big stone from the front of the cave where Jesus was buried, and sat on it. (read or have an older child read Mark 16:6) So, the women hurried to tell Jesus’ friends what they had found. They were no longer sad. They had good news to tell.

We can be happy, too. Knowing that Jesus is alive again. But when we have good news, do we keep it ourselves? No, we want to share it, and that’s what Jesus wants us to do. Jesus wants us to share with others what we know about him.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, we are so happy you are alive. We don’t want to keep it a secret, but we want to share it with those around us. Help us as we share with others the good news of Easter – You are alive! Thank you for loving us, and thank you for the good news we can share with others. Amen.
