Praise for Jesus

Themes: Praise; God/Jesus’ Greatness

Scripture: Psalm 145:3

Need: Wave bottle, Bible

Sermon

Good morning, children. (show the children the bottle. If you have many children, have two or three bottles for them to pass around.) The waves in this bottle reminds me of the ocean. The ocean is really big. So big, we cannot see to the other side. The ocean is so deep, we cannot see to the bottom. There are some places in the ocean that are so deep, no human has been there before. The ocean is so big and so deep we can’t understand everything about it.

Even as great and mysterious as the ocean is, Jesus is even greater. Our verse today says something about his greatness. (read or have an older child read Psalm 145:3) God is so great, he is [beyond our discovery] (use the wording of the translation you use here). We can know some things about Jesus, but he is more than we can understand or know. If we look at the ocean and admire it greatness, how much more should we admire the greatness of Jesus.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for Jesus. We thank you for loving us enough to send Jesus to forgive us for the wrong things we do. Amen.

Notes

Making the wave bottle:

Fill a clear bottle half full with water. Put in a few drops of blue food coloring. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with mineral oil (or any other clear oil). Put the lid on tight. I usually tape them shut with duct tape to prevent leaks and opening.

A Woman Gave Her Money

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Topics: Giving

Reference: Luke 21:1-4; Mark 12:41-44

Need: Two pennies

Sermon:

(Hold up penny) Does anyone know what this is? (Allow children to answer) That’s right, it’s a penny. What can you buy with a penny? (Wait for response) You can’t buy much with a penny can you? (Hold up second penny) What about two pennies? (Wait for response.) You still can’t buy much with two pennies. Did you know that two pennies were very important to Jesus?

Once while Jesus was at church, He watched the people put their gifts into the collection box. Some were very rich people, and they put in a lot of money. Along came a poor woman and she dropped in just two pennies. Jesus told his friends, “I tell you that this poor woman has put in more than all the others. Everyone else gave what they didn’t need. But she is very poor and gave everything she had.”

The poor woman did not have much to give, but she gave everything she had. We may think we don’t have much to give, but God is pleased when we give what we can.  Just like the poor women, we may not have much to give, but what we have we can give. Even two pennies are important when we give them to God.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you that you love us. Help us to remember everything we give to you is important. Amen.

What We Do; Who We Are

Themes: Our actions tell others of God’s love

Scripture: Matthew 7:12

Need: Baseball glove, paintbrush, CD (or some other computer related item)

Sermon

Good morning, children. I’m going to show you some items I have with me today. For each one,we will think of some things we can know about someone who uses these items. (show the children the baseball glove) I have a baseball glove. The person who uses this probably likes being outside, being active, and enjoys baseball and maybe other sports. (paintbrush) The person who uses a paintbrush probably enjoys painting pictures. they might also enjoy drawing or other crafts and art activities. (CD) The person who uses a computer CD like this one probably owns a computer. They might use a computer at work. They might even write computer programs for computers.

So, the things people use can tell us a lot about them, but I want you to know that the things we do can tell people about us, too. Jesus had a lot to say about the actions of people who follow him. (read or have an older child read Matthew 7:12) One thing Jesus said about the things we do is we should treat others the way we want to be treated. Since we want to obey Jesus, we should try hard to do just that. This is just one of the many things Jesus said about the things we do. The things we do can show others God’s love.

Prayer

Dear God, help us to remember that the things we do can show our love for you. Amen.

In Remembrance of Me

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Themes: Lord’s Supper, Communion

Scripture: Luke 22:19

Need: Pictures of a place, people, or event

Sermon

Good morning, children. (show pictures to the children) Today, I have with me some pictures. We all have pictures of things and events that are special to us. We take pictures so we can have a visual reminder of someone or something that happened. Pictures are a great way to remember things.

When Jesus was near the end of his time here on earth, he sat down with his friends for a very special meal. During this meal, he did something that gave them a picture of what was about to happen. He took the bread and broke it, and told them to remember that his body would get broken. Then he took the wine and asked them all to drink, and to remember he died so they could receive forgiveness.

(read or have an older child read Luke 22:19)

We don’t have any pictures or paintings of what the real Jesus looked like. Many artist have drawn or painted what they think Jesus looked like. However, Jesus gave us something more important. A way to remember what he did for us. Whenever we have the Lord’s Supper, we are doing several things: we are obeying Jesus, because he told us to do it; and we are remembering what Jesus did so we could receive forgiveness from God.

Just like we take pictures to remember someone or something that happened, the Lord’s Supper is a visual picture to remind us what Jesus did for us.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for sending Jesus. Help us to always remember that Jesus came and gave his life so we could be forgiven. Amen.
