Themes: Telling others about Jesus

Scripture: Psalm 105:1

Need: A starfish

Sermon

Good morning, children. (hold up starfish) Do you know what this is? At one time, this star fish was alive and living in the ocean. Starfish cannot live without water. This starfish was probably washed up on the shore, and it died when it couldn’t get back in the ocean.

This starfish reminds me of a story. A man was walking on the beach one day, and he saw a man picking up something off the beach and throwing it into the ocean. He watched the man do this several times. Finally, he walked up to the man and asked him, “What are you doing?”

“Why, I’m throwing these starfish back into the ocean, because if I don’t, they will die.”

The man looked around and saw hundreds of starfish washed up on the beach. The beach stretched for miles.

“There may be thousands of starfish on this beach,” he told the man. “Can’t you see that it is impossible to get them all? How can it possibly make any difference?”

The man bend down and picked up a starfish and threw it back into the ocean. “It made a difference to that one.”

All over the world, there are people who have never heard about Jesus. People who do not know about God’s love. It may seem like we can’t make a difference, but when we tell someone about Jesus and God’s love, we make a difference for that person. That is why it is important for us to tell others what we know about Jesus and God’s love.

Our verse today challenges us to do just that. (read or have an older child read Psalm 105:1)

Prayer

Dear God, help us to make a difference in the lives of the people we meet by sharing the love of Jesus with them. Amen.

Themes: Prayer

Scripture: Philippians 4:6

Need: Cell phone. Arrange for someone to call you as you begin your children’s sermon.

Sermon

Good morning, children. I hope you have had a good week. (Start to talk about last week lesson or something until you get the call. Once the phone rings, answer it. Ad lib a conversation, telling the other person that you have to go.) I’m sure you have all seen a phone like this. I can take it with me everywhere I go, so I can always get in touch with someone or they can get in touch with me. What if you could call anyone in the world? Who would you call?

Have you every wished that you could call God? Actually, we can. But we don’t need a phone. We can talk to God anytime through prayer. God is always listening. God loves you, and wants to hear from you. And like a cell phone, you can talk to God any time and any place. When we are worried or afraid, God wants us to tell him about it. (Read or have an older child read Philippians 4:6.) It is good to know that we can pray about anything. Let’s talk to God now.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you that we can talk to you any time and any where. Thank you for the things you have done for us. Amen.

Themes: Sin, obeying God, reading the Bible

Scripture: Psalm 119:11

Need: A first-aid manual and Bible.

Sermon

Good morning, children. I have a book with me today. Can you tell me what this is? (hold up manual) Yes, this is a first-aid manual. Inside it, we find how to help people when they are hurt or sick. By helping them, they can get strong and feel better. It’s good to know the things in this book so we can help others. It takes time to look things up and find them in the manual. It is better to already know what it says.

I have another book with me. (hold up Bible) Do you know what book this is? Yes, this is the Bible. Inside it, we find the things God wants us to do to live a life that pleases him. Our verse today tells us something we can do to help us obey God when when feel like disobeying God. (read or have an older child read Psalm 119:11)

When we “hide” God’s word in our heart, we don’t just read it, but we read it, learn it, and do our best to obey it. Like our first-aid manual, it is better to know what it says than to have to look it up when we need it. Remember that sin is when we disobey God. By knowing what the Bible says, we can do what God wants us to do.

Prayer

Dear God, we thank you for your word, the Bible. Help us to know it, so we can do the things that please you. Amen.
