Exploring God’s World

We had a good time at our first meeting. We learned about God’s creation of the world. We learned about how a spoon can turn things upside down! We also discovered we can poke sharp things through a baggy of water without it popping. Join us this week as we continue our discoveries into God’s world and learn more about our amazing God!

In Isaiah 6, we read about Isaiah’s vision of God in the temple. The very presence of God rocked the temple. Rock bands only dream of playing so loud it knocks the dust off the columns of the arena.

The important thing in this passage is not the volume, but the response of Isaiah, “Here I am, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8) We all need a readiness to respond to God’s call.

Compassion

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 4:32

During Sunday School on Sunday, this verse in Ephesians was one of the verses we had for helping us discuss the topic of obeying the commands of God. I asked, “Does anyone know what the word ‘compassionate’ means?” I received blank stares from around the table. I stated, “Compassion is when we help someone who failed understand that it is okay.”

One of the boys spoke up, “I did something like that.” He began to tell a story about how a friend had “messed up” playing a game. The boy was about to cry. He said he put his arm around the boy and told him, “It’s okay.”

When people mess up, what is our first reaction? Condemnation or compassion? Do we laugh when someone falls, or do we reach out and help them to their feet? Do we rejoice in someone else’s misfortune, or do we reach out and give a helping hand?

When the sky is the darkest, people need light, not more darkness. The homeless person on the street will not hear your good news about Jesus, when his stomach is empty and growling. Children will not listen to you, unless you are willing to listen to them. The sinner will not repent, unless he knows he will be forgiven. Through our actions, we channel the forgiveness of God to others.

Be a light of God’s forgiveness this week.

Exploring God’s Creation Begins June 17

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Starting June 17, we will change our Wednesday night program for the children. We will explore God’s creation through Bible stories, science, and art. I have some fun experiments to do, like poking a pencil through a bag of water (and it not exploding all over the place), the Mentos and coke fountain, and many other fun science projects I have learned. We might even build some simple robots. While we are having all this fun, we will learn some things, not only about God’s creation and science, but about God and our relationship with Him.

Come join us for Exploring God’s Creation on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30 PM. You will have fun and learn something in the process.

Exploring God’s Creation is for children who have completed grades K-6.

Praying for the Small Things

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Last month, we had a lot of rain. Most of the week, the preschoolers in the Child Enrichment Center had not had the opportunity to go outside. In our prayer at our weekly worship service, we prayed, “God, we thank you for the rain that helps the flowers grow. Give us some sunshine so we can go out and play.” Indeed, the sun was out that day, and the children were able to go out and play. Did God answer our prayer and bring us sunshine? Maybe. More importantly, the children learned it is okay to ask God for the little things in life, as well as the big things.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages us to “Pray without ceasing.” Praying without ceasing, to me, means we are praying throughout the day, saying little prayers for the small as well as the big things in life.

Every day is full of decisions that have to be made. Some are trivial, others are major. I am not suggesting that we ask God what color of socks we should wear today, but what about that meeting with a client or luncheon with a colleague? Do we make God a part of our business day? Do we pray for our children as they go off to school or play? Do we pray for a sick pet? Do we pray before writing someone a letter or email?

If God is Lord and Master of our lives, we should make Him an inseparable part of our lives. Include God in your life today at work, home, and play.

Nothing is too big or too small for our God.
