Faith and Determination

Reference: Mark 2:1-12

Jesus came to Capernaum, and the news of his arrival spread quickly.  Many came to listen to his teachings.  The house became so crowded that no one could get through the door.  Four men came carrying a friend who could not walk.  They were determined to get their friend to Jesus.  Since they could not get through the door, they went up on the roof, dug through the roof, and lowered the man down to Jesus.  These men showed great faith in Jesus.  Their faith produced determination, and because of their determination, the man was healed.  We should have the same determination generating faith in bringing others to Christ.

Carrying the man on a mat, the four friends brought the paralytic to Jesus, because they believed that Jesus could heal him.  Jesus heals more than just physical ailments.  He heals spiritual ailments as well.  When someone puts their faith in Jesus and Jesus alone, they are healed.  Christians should believe that Jesus can help even the most desperate of sinners. His salvation was good enough for us, and it is good enough for others.

The four friends did not let the crowd stop them from getting their friend to Jesus.  They carried him up on the roof, dug through the roof, and lowered their friend down to Jesus.  Many Christians let obstacles stand in their way of witnessing to others.  They make excuses, saying they are no good at witnessing.  However, our greatest witness is our daily life.  Our faith should produce a determination that propels us to do whatever it takes for others to see the effect that Jesus has made
in our lives.

Because of their faith, the four friends were determined to get to Jesus, and their friend was healed.  Jesus saw the faith of the four friends and he healed the paralytic.  We, too, need the same faith generated determination in our witness for Jesus.  The Scriptures say in Romans 10:14, “But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed?  And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard?  And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him?

Disaster Relief

Hurricanes, floods, tornados, and fires are example of times when people’s lives are changed by events they have no control over. During these times people need the help of good people, and the love of God. There are many organizations who help with disaster relief. Through these organization, people get the food, water, and shelter they need in times of disaster.

As God’s children, we should be willing to help those around us who are in need, especially those who have lost their home due to hurricane, fire, floods, and tornados.

Salute to Mom

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

When I think of my mother, I am always reminded of the story of Hannah, the mother of Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1-2:11). After three daughters, my mother wanted a son. She prayed for a son. I was brought into this world under the veil of prayer. I know that the prayers did not stop once I was born. My mother spends many hours on her knees in prayer for me, as she has done throughout my entire life.

My mother did more than pray for me. I remember my mother teaching me in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Backyard Bible Clubs. My mother never took lightly the responsibility of a parent to train up a child in the way he should go. (Proverb 22:6) All my life, my mother always pointed me toward God and His Word.

Finally, my mother’s generosity was an example to her children. We saw my mother giving of herself to others. We didn’t have a lot to give monetarily, but she gave her time and talents. My mother was industrious. She could take little bits and pieces and turn it into something. She helped friend, family, church, and neighbor in times of need.

My mother honors God with her life. She still prays for me. I know she still helps others in their times of need. Even though all her children are grown, she still teaches children at church. I thank God that I had a godly mother who honors God. It has made all the difference in my life.

“Charm can be deceiving, and beauty fades away, but a woman who honors the Lord deserves to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30 CEV).
